September 30th

We started our new word work today. We got to sort them today. Today was Orange Shirt Day. We discussed what it would be like to not be allowed to go to school near our families and not be able to speak our first languages. We then wrote one thing we couldn't imagine life without on our shirt that we cut out, coloured orange and glued into our visual journals. We began our problem of the week in math. We looked at a graph and we had to read it. There was also an open ended question where we were given an answer and asked to provide as many answers as possible. I'm requesting that our Grade 3's bring headphones to school tomorrow. They may need them for a few days this week. We are going to do a math and literacy activity (informal assessment) on the computers and the students may require headphones to hear some of the questions. I have talked to the class about how this is for me to know what they remember from Grade 2 and where they may need extra help for Grade 3.

Today was buddy day! We were very excited about meeting our buddy from Mr. Link's class. We had the opportunity to interview our buddy. In math we made surveys with the main question being "What did Calgary look like 50 years ago?" We then had 3 to 5 options for our classmates to choose from. We will begin to graph this data tomorrow in Math. We watched a video about Terry Fox at the end of the day. Students thought it was interesting that there is currently an 80% survival rate. We are going to be writing a newspaper article about Terry Fox, pretending that they saw him run. In Gym we played Great Wall of China. We worked on our new problem of the week and got our new word work for the week. Anyone who didn't finish their one spelling activity today is coming home with their word work in order to do the one spelling activity. Students can choose what they do. Some choices are creating a tangled web with their words, putting them into alphabetical order, counting out and recording the number of syllables, writing their words so that the vowels are a different colour, sailboat words, fancy words, c

We did more work on our Math Workshop. Students discussed their strategies for creating the number scale and determining how they came up with amount of items sold on Friday along with the cost in the book we read yesterday. We have started Communities in Our World for Social Studies. The class did a picture walk. They were asked to look for differences within the different pictures that showed different communities from all over the world. We brainstormed the different observations they made. Students were then asked to create a title page. We had fun playing a tag game called Great Wall of China in gym. The Grade 4's taught the Grade 3's how to play the game. It was great to see the students working as a team to make the game work and problem solve. During Work Period students were successful in working independently and completing work. We began our problem of the week today. Students are given an open ended math problem that they can work on throughout the week. Thi

During Work Period students wrote about their weekend. They worked on finishing up their class survey and graphing their data. We started word work in our small groups today. Students had to sort words according to different patterns. They then got to do a spelling activity of their choice. It was fun! Today was the first math workshop for Grade 3/4. We read "Lemonade for Sale" and we are working on graphing the information we discovered in the story. We created our own store names and pricing list. We are working with small groups. Each Grade 4 student has a Grade 3 partner to work with on creating their math workshop poster. It was great to see everyone sharing their ideas. Grade 4 had fun playing bingo in French. Today was another crazy busy day. During work period, Grade 4's worked on the French alphabet.  Grade 3 and 4's worked on finishing their summer writing, time capsule and math. We began to write three truths and a fib. We are trying to trick our classmates by making our fib less obvious. In Math we looked at making a graph about our favourite hockey teams. Students enjoyed brainstorming all the hockey teams. We chose a few of them. Then voted on our favourites. Grade 3 and 4 then had time to work on their graphing survey and begin to graph their data. Friday September 6 is Blue day at LBS. Please remember to wear something blue and white. Don't forget that we have early dismissal on Fridays. Our Friday dismissal is at 12:15.

Tuesday September 4th

It was fun to get our new seats this morning. It's a great opportunity to work with other students. Each month we will get a new seat. In Math we came up with a few questions to ask our classmates. We used tallies to record the data we collected. Our next steps will be to finish collecting our information and then we will put this information into a graph. We got to go outside for Gym this morning. We had a great time playing tag as a Grade 3/4 learning community. It was nice to have a Montessori Work Period this afternoon. It's time when we can choose different things to work on from a list of good work choices. Before we begin our Work Period, we have to show our teacher our list of what we have chosen to do for our Montessori Work Period. Grade 4 started French today during work period. We began creating our title page. We will be learning beginner French and will begin by exploring the French alphabet. Room 2 is bringing home their welcome back school package. Pleas

Welcome Back!

Welcome back to school! We had our welcome back assembly today. It was so nice to see our friends after our summer break. Today we wrote in our new journals about our summer break. We sang and skipped "skip, skip lines" to remember to skip lines when we wrote about the great summer we had. Students designed their name tags for their cubbies. We had a lot of fun designing and decorating our tags. We talked about how we can use respect as our classroom rule. Students felt that being respectful is a great way to show grace and gratitude. Grade 4's, if you took home your words, words, words books at the end of last school year and still have them, please bring them back to school. Our Room 2 learning community is looking forward to a new school year. It will be great to get to know each other and learn from one another.
